From Grief to Connection: Join my Comfort Blanket Project

Do you crochet? If you have a hook and a little bit of time, I’d love to invite you into a project close to my heart.

A Small Idea with a Simple Purpose

A couple of years ago, I went through a difficult time after a personal loss. During that period, a friend gave me a beautiful hand-knit blanket she called a prayer blanket. It was a physical reminder that I wasn’t as alone as I felt.

I used to be an avid knitter, but at that time I didn’t have the bandwidth for anything complex or time-consuming. I needed something simple to keep my hands busy, so I decided to try crocheting and found that making granny squares was the perfect project—it was easy to pick up, repetitive, and didn’t require much mental energy.

The multi-colored blanket you see in the photo is one I made for myself. It’s been my go-to for staying warm and feeling comforted during the winter.

Let’s Create a “Hug” for Someone Else

That feeling of comfort is something I want to share with my Toronto community. My hope is to start a project where we can all contribute a little piece of ourselves (in this case some squares) that can help someone else feel less alone.

The idea is easy and open to everyone:

  • Craft a Square: crochet simple granny squares—using the same directions and colour (I use this video from YouTube). You’ll buy your yarn at Michaels Canada.

  • Join the Connection: Together, we’ll join these individual squares into full comfort blankets.

  • Share the Warmth: Every blanket will be donated to a local women’s shelter, offering a bit of comfort to women navigating their own difficult paths.

What you’ll Need:

  • yarn from Michaels Canada (there are set colours we use)
  • a number 5.5mm crochet needle
  • a darning needle
  • time and love

How You Can Get Involved

You don’t need to commit to making a whole blanket—just a square or two makes a difference!

Drop off will be at my clinic Women’s Health Centre at 331 Danforth Avenue in Toronto, Ontario.
